This spring 2026 Safer Nights Out is a West Midlands Police (WMP) initiative aimed at ensuring the region's nightlife is secure, particularly for women and girls. The campaign combines visible policing, staff training in venues, and public safety tools. Key Initiatives & Safety Schemes Ask for Angela: A simple code-word scheme used in participating bars and clubs. If you feel unsafe, approach staff and "Ask for Angela"; they will discreetly help you to a safe space or a taxi.Safe Haven Hubs: Central safety spots (e.g., Queen’s Square in Wolverhampton) providing first aid, phone charging, safe transport assistance, and a secure place to wait.Night Guardians & Patrols: Teams of dedicated officers, special constables, and "Night Guardians" conduct high-visibility and plain-clothed patrols on Friday and Saturday nights to deter predatory behaviour.Anti-Spiking Efforts: Licensing teams work with venues to distribute anti-drink spiking products and train staff to recognize the signs of spiking. Local Focus: Wolverhampton (Wednesfield & Heath Town) Bentley Bridge: Recent priorities include tackling anti-social behavior at the Bentley Bridge Shopping Centre with increased weekend patrols and partnership working with site security.Wolverhampton City Centre: The "Safer Nights System" operates from 7:30 PM to 3:30 AM on weekends, integrating police, CCTV operators, and outreach teams to respond to incidents quickly. Quick Tips for a Safer Night Plan Ahead: Pre-book your taxi or arrange a designated driver, and let someone know your expected return time.Stay Charged: Ensure your phone is fully charged before leaving and keep your valuables out of sight in public.Stay Together: Stick with your group; if someone appears too intoxicated or vulnerable, ensure they are looked after by a trusted friend.Reporting: If you see something suspicious or feel at risk, alert venue security, use Live Chat on the WMP website, or call 999 in an emergency. Wednesfield Local Focus: Bentley Bridge Police and local authorities have specifically targeted Bentley Bridge Leisure Park to ensure it remains a welcoming environment during the evenings. Public Space Protection Order (PSPO): As of early 2026, a new PSPO has been proposed (and is moving toward implementation) for the whole of Bentley Bridge . This allows police to disperse groups of three or more suspected of causing a nuisance and request the removal of face coverings. Reassurance Patrols: The Wednesfield Neighbourhood Team conducts high-visibility patrols, particularly on weekends, to disrupt anti-social behaviour and support local businesses. Wolverhampton Safe Haven Hub (Serving Heath Town & Wednesfield) Because Heath Town and parts of Wednesfield are adjacent to the city centre, residents often use the Safe Haven hub located in Queen Square (WV1 1TH). Operating Hours: Open every Friday and Saturday night from 22:30 to 03:30.Services Provided:- Support: Assistance with arranging safe transport home or calling a taxi.
- Welfare: Free water, phone charging (10-minute bursts), and even flip-flops for those struggling with footwear.
- Safety: Medical staff are on-site for welfare checks, and it serves as a secure place to wait for friends.
Night Guardians & Patrols Night Guardians: A team of visible, uniformed volunteers and staff who patrol key routes between venues and transport hubs to deter anti-social behaviour and help vulnerable individuals.CCTV Integration: Enhanced monitoring of key routes from the city center toward the Heath Town and Wednesfield areas to identify potential risks in real-time.more info: https://www.westmidlands.police.uk/police-forces/west-midlands-police/areas/campaigns/campaigns/safer-nights-out/ Thank you from your Wednesfield and Heath Town Team. |
